I haven't blogged in a while because I have been working really hard at my church. I am the lead guy on a building project. It is something we have been working on for a while. Its amazing how God has really been closing the doors we should not go through and opening the right doors we should go through. Its an amazing process I will blog about it more later. Our church is called Crosspointe Community Church and we have a very loving congregation of around 200 people. We started with just under 100 people about 6 years ago and have doubled in size. A big problem has always been our seating capacity. We fill up and because of lack of seats, we seem to thin back out. We currently want to really be a church in the community and have had many events this summer in our community trying to show the love of Jesus in a practical way. We currently rent from Gateway business center which used to be an old mall and our space we rent has its limitations. But we have property and have signed on a note, hence starting the building a church process. I hope anyone who made read this will keep us in prayer because it is going to be a very tenuous process and we still need to raise about $100,000 in order to complete the project (we have a loan of $850,000 to get it going). I read in the paper the other day that Earth Fare grocery store is opening up in the old Goody's location right here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It will feature natural and organic foods as well as a small eatery much like Greenlife in downtown Chattanooga. Chattanooga continues to be a very "green" city and the people here really support these types of businesses. I am trying to put up a display in these stores or even possibly a small Green Mattress Company kiosk type store in these locations. I hope they will allow me to do it at some point.

Most of my sales were from here in town but I did have a sale to Ridge, New York and one going to Hawaii. Hey all, Wesley at the Green Mattress Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee here. I just wanted to share a few thoughts with you. I went to Wal-Mart the other day and saw where they have a "Eco-form" 12 inch memory foam mattress for around $500. This is what I was referring to on my last blog about buying a mattress from stores that do not know anything about mattresses. Although Wal-Mart has a store front and an obvious retail presence, their sales associates know very, very little about the product. I can tell you a little about their "eco" form mattress though. They call it an Eco mattress because it has about 5% soy in it. Thats about it as far as the eco-friendly part goes. Almost every mattress on the market has some soy in it. Their mattress will be about 95% petroleum based (green washing!), hot and not very durable, but it is cheap. It will last a good 6-9 months without getting a crater sized body impression in it. It will also make you hate memory foam because of its heat retention. I know economic times are tough but please do not compromise your health to go "cheap" . There is nothing wrong with shopping at Wal-Mart, I buy my groceries there, but not something as important as my sleep, something I am on for 1/3 of my life. I too carry a cheap $500 queen mattress but it is a pretty solid step ahead of Wal-Mart's version. My $500 queen is and will be greener, more durable and healthier than your Wal-Mart version. Is it the best I carry? No. Is it the most Durable? No. Is it the cheapest? Yes. Buy what you can afford but buy from a mattress dealer that knows what he or she is carrying and buy a product you feel comfortable with knowing that you will spend the next 1/3 of your life on it.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to note that you must be really careful as you are researching any online mattress sites. I just researched one of the product lines that I currently carry on a couple of websites and found a whole bunch of mis-truths, exaggerations, and flat out lies. There really is not anyway to police these websites that are just thrown up there by people who have never sold mattresses before. Anybody can go to Godaddy.com and start their own website and claim to sell the cheapest, best, healthiest whatever. That is really too bad. I recently had a customer email me and ask what to do about a mattress they bought from a bed in a box type website, where he bought a mattress from someone who had no idea what they were selling. But they put a bunch of stuff online that sounded good (too good to be true), and sold a very cheap mattress to this customer that was not all is said it was. So how do you disseminate all these "best" claiming mattress stores on line. Simple, make sure the website has a store front, somewhere that is open to the public, otherwise you could be buying someones used mattress out of their basement. Secondly, call the store and ask to speak to the owner. The owner ought to have extensive experience in the bedding industry and ought to know everything about the product he or she sales as well as the entire bedding industry as a whole. The owner also ought to know what makes his product different besides the usual "cheapest price" and "we carry name brands" banter that is so prevalent in our industry. After a good conversation with the owner, you ought to be able to make a pretty good discernment of whether he or she is your typical salesman who is just out to make a profit or someone who is deeply passionate about what he or she does. For instance you can call The Green Mattress Company any time and ask about our product, why we carry it and so on, but you can also call and ask for me (Wesley), the owner and I will be happy to talk to you. I don't even mind if my salespeople give out my own personal cell phone number to customers because I enjoy what I do, and I enjoy helping customers, even if you are not going to buy. I helped the aforementioned man who bought that cheap mattress online with three or four emails and a few hours worth of correspondence all because I know what I am doing and I truly enjoy helping customers out. So do your homework, but be realistic. If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Call the store your looking at. Ask them a ton of questions, email them and make the best buying choice based on your level of trust with that company you are dealing with.
