Hey all, Wesley from the Green Mattress Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee here. I just placed the weekend's orders and noticed a very interesting phenomena. Most of my sales were from here in town but I did have a sale to Ridge, New York and one going to Hawaii. I had a friend ask me if someone came all the way from Hawaii just to buy a mattress from The Green Mattress Company in Chattanooga, TN and as much as much as I would like to think we are that much of a global company that particular customer was visiting family here in Chattanooga. Hey all, Wesley at the Green Mattress Company in Chattanooga, Tennessee here. I just wanted to share a few thoughts with you. I went to Wal-Mart the other day and saw where they have a "Eco-form" 12 inch memory foam mattress for around $500. This is what I was referring to on my last blog about buying a mattress from stores that do not know anything about mattresses. Although Wal-Mart has a store front and an obvious retail presence, their sales associates know very, very little about the product. I can tell you a little about their "eco" form mattress though. They call it an Eco mattress because it has about 5% soy in it. Thats about it as far as the eco-friendly part goes. Almost every mattress on the market has some soy in it. Their mattress will be about 95% petroleum based (green washing!), hot and not very durable, but it is cheap. It will last a good 6-9 months without getting a crater sized body impression in it. It will also make you hate memory foam because of its heat retention. I know economic times are tough but please do not compromise your health to go "cheap" . There is nothing wrong with shopping at Wal-Mart, I buy my groceries there, but not something as important as my sleep, something I am on for 1/3 of my life. I too carry a cheap $500 queen mattress but it is a pretty solid step ahead of Wal-Mart's version. My $500 queen is and will be greener, more durable and healthier than your Wal-Mart version. Is it the best I carry? No. Is it the most Durable? No. Is it the cheapest? Yes. Buy what you can afford but buy from a mattress dealer that knows what he or she is carrying and buy a product you feel comfortable with knowing that you will spend the next 1/3 of your life on it.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to note that you must be really careful as you are researching any online mattress sites. I just researched one of the product lines that I currently carry on a couple of websites and found a whole bunch of mis-truths, exaggerations, and flat out lies. There really is not anyway to police these websites that are just thrown up there by people who have never sold mattresses before. Anybody can go to Godaddy.com and start their own website and claim to sell the cheapest, best, healthiest whatever. That is really too bad. I recently had a customer email me and ask what to do about a mattress they bought from a bed in a box type website, where he bought a mattress from someone who had no idea what they were selling. But they put a bunch of stuff online that sounded good (too good to be true), and sold a very cheap mattress to this customer that was not all is said it was. So how do you disseminate all these "best" claiming mattress stores on line. Simple, make sure the website has a store front, somewhere that is open to the public, otherwise you could be buying someones used mattress out of their basement. Secondly, call the store and ask to speak to the owner. The owner ought to have extensive experience in the bedding industry and ought to know everything about the product he or she sales as well as the entire bedding industry as a whole. The owner also ought to know what makes his product different besides the usual "cheapest price" and "we carry name brands" banter that is so prevalent in our industry. After a good conversation with the owner, you ought to be able to make a pretty good discernment of whether he or she is your typical salesman who is just out to make a profit or someone who is deeply passionate about what he or she does. For instance you can call The Green Mattress Company any time and ask about our product, why we carry it and so on, but you can also call and ask for me (Wesley), the owner and I will be happy to talk to you. I don't even mind if my salespeople give out my own personal cell phone number to customers because I enjoy what I do, and I enjoy helping customers, even if you are not going to buy. I helped the aforementioned man who bought that cheap mattress online with three or four emails and a few hours worth of correspondence all because I know what I am doing and I truly enjoy helping customers out. So do your homework, but be realistic. If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Call the store your looking at. Ask them a ton of questions, email them and make the best buying choice based on your level of trust with that company you are dealing with.

Organic sleep? When I first told many of my friends that I was going to open an organic sleep shop I was mostly greeted with a scoff or a chuckle, “Organic bedding? What in the world is that?” I know when we think organic we think clothes or food, but sleep?

Yes, believe it or not organic sleep systems are out there and are much, much better for your overall health. Think about it. You spend 1/3rd of your life asleep (at least your supposed to) and how you act, your mood, your motor skills, your memory and cognitive abilities are all affected by how much sleep you get each night and not only that but how well you sleep.

Normal status quo innerspring mattresses, polyurethane products and synthetic latex products are all made with petroleum, harmful flame retardant chemicals, gassy odor free chemicals such as TDI which you cannot see but you do inhale, synthetic fillers, allergy causing pesticides and other chemicals that are harmful to both consumers and the environment. We breathe these chemicals all night as the mattress “off gasses”. I do not know all of the exact implications of these chemicals but I do know that what we breathe has long term implications on our health.

The more natural the product is without so much involvement from man made chemicals the better it is for us (organic latex and other organic foams are actually much more durable and ergonomically more supportive than any innerspring mattress).
